Kolkata, Oct 26 (NationPress) The Meteorological (MeT) office reported on Sunday that Cyclone Montha is expected to have no direct effect on West Bengal, yet it is set to bring significant rainfall starting Monday.
Areas in South Bengal, including Kolkata, will experience rain due to the cyclone's influence.
The MeT office's special bulletin indicates that the cyclone is likely to make landfall as a severe cyclonic storm between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatam on the Andhra Pradesh coast near the Kakinada region on Tuesday evening or night.
At landfall, wind speeds could reach 90-100 kilometres per hour, potentially escalating to 110 kilometres per hour, according to the MeT Department.
MeT official Sourish Banerjee stated that while the cyclone will not directly impact the state, the sea along the Bengal coast will be rough from October 28 to 30, with gusty winds expected to reach 35-45 kilometres per hour and possibly up to 55 kilometres per hour.
In light of the rough seas, fishermen in Bengal are advised to refrain from venturing into the sea between October 28 and 30. Those currently at sea are urged to return by Monday (October 27), the official added.
On Monday, light thundershowers are anticipated in one or two locations in South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, East Midnapore, and West Midnapore districts. Tuesday is expected to bring heavy rainfall to several areas in South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore, while light to moderate rain with thundershowers is likely across other southern Bengal districts.
Furthermore, regions including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Jhargram, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Kolkata are projected to encounter light to moderate rain with thundershowers in most areas on Wednesday. Similar weather conditions are likely throughout south Bengal on Thursday and Friday.
In contrast, the likelihood of thunderstorms in North Bengal remains low. However, rainfall is expected to gradually increase over the following week.
On Saturday, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 32.9 degrees Celsius, which is 1.2 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature on Sunday was 25.5 degrees Celsius, exceeding the normal by 2.5 degrees Celsius.
