Kolkata, Nov 23 (NationPress) The Meteorological Department announced on Sunday that the arrival of winter in the districts of south Bengal and Kolkata is contingent upon the influence of Cyclone Senyar, which is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal this week.
As per the Regional Meteorological Centre located in Alipore, Kolkata, a low-pressure area has emerged over the Bay of Bengal, anticipated to escalate into a depression by November 24. A cyclonic storm is expected to materialize in the Bay of Bengal around November 26. This storm, named Senyar by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marks the second cyclone to arise in the Bay of Bengal during the post-monsoon period.
It is important to note that Cyclone Montha made landfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh near Kakinada on October 28, classified as a severe cyclone.
Currently, meteorologists are uncertain about the trajectory and path that Cyclone Senyar will take once formed. However, it is likely to influence the weather patterns in coastal Bengal.
"We are continuously monitoring the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. It is expected to gradually evolve into a depression tomorrow and transform into a cyclonic storm by Wednesday. Should the system approach the Bengal and Odisha coasts, it will directly impact the local weather, stalling the winter onset in South Bengal and Kolkata by raising temperatures," stated a meteorological official.
Conversely, if the system veers in another direction, it will cause an indirect effect on the state's weather, which will also lead to a temperature rise but without lasting repercussions.
"Our team is closely observing the system. Within two days, we will have a clearer understanding, allowing us to make accurate weather forecasts," the official added.
In the meantime, fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the southwest Bay of Bengal until November 25 and along the southeast Bay of Bengal until November 28.
