Kolkata, Nov 27 (NationPress) The Meteorological Department announced on Thursday that a rise in temperatures in south Bengal is expected in the coming days due to a new depression forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is anticipated to develop into a cyclonic storm.
This situation will temporarily halt the winter chill that had begun to envelop Kolkata and its surrounding areas.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Alipore reported that a deep depression over the southwestern part of the Bay of Bengal is likely to evolve into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours. Once it gains strength, it will be designated as Cyclone Ditwah, a name bestowed by Yemen.
The weather system originated from a well-defined low-pressure area over the southwestern Bay of Bengal and the adjacent regions of southeastern Sri Lanka and the equatorial Indian Ocean. It escalated into a depression late Wednesday at 11:30 p.m. Moving north-northwest at approximately 8 kmph, it further intensified into a deep depression by 5:30 a.m. on Thursday.
While this system is not expected to directly affect the weather conditions in West Bengal, the weather changes in the Bay of Bengal will have an indirect effect.
"Consequently, temperatures across South Bengal may rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. The winter chill that had started to settle will be hindered as temperatures increase. However, once the system dissipates, a significant drop in temperatures in South Bengal will follow. The weather is anticipated to shift after December 1, when the full impact of winter will be felt throughout Bengal," said a meteorological department official.
After transforming into a cyclonic storm, the system is expected to head towards the northern coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh over the next 48 hours.
During this time, Tamil Nadu is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from November 27 to December 1.
