Delhi Vivek Vihar fire kills 9, including toddler; Rajnath Singh expresses grief
A devastating fire tore through a four-storey building in Vivek Vihar, Delhi, in the early hours of Sunday, 3 May, killing nine people — including a toddler — and injuring several others, according to officials. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the bereaved families.
How the Fire Unfolded
The blaze broke out on the second floor of the building at premises No. B-13, Vivek Vihar Phase I, at approximately 4 am IST. As many as 14 fire engines were dispatched to the scene following the alert. Firefighters and rescue teams worked swiftly, bringing the fire under control by 6 am — within two hours of its outbreak.
Police personnel, including the Vivek Vihar SHO and the Area Crime Prevention (ACP) officer, proceeded to the spot immediately upon receiving information. A crime team also reached the premises alongside the fire brigade.
Rescue Operations and Casualties
During the rescue and fire-extinguishing operations, 15 persons were rescued from the building. Of these, two sustained minor injuries and were shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for medical treatment. The remaining injured were taken to a nearby hospital.
Preliminary enquiries confirmed that nine persons lost their lives in the incident. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, according to officials, and further enquiry and proceedings at the spot are ongoing.
