New Delhi, June 20 (NationPress) In a pivotal move aimed at safeguarding Delhi's architectural heritage, Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has pledged his support for an effort to transform the Delhi Legislative Assembly into a Living Heritage Site of national significance, as stated by an official on Friday.
In a letter directed to Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, Union Minister Shekhawat expressed: "We are eager to collaborate closely with your office to conserve this historic structure and unleash its full cultural potential for the citizens of Delhi and the entire nation."
In his correspondence dated June 17, the Union Minister remarked: "The Delhi Assembly Building is a notable landmark that not only embodies the rich political heritage of our country but also serves as a lasting symbol of architectural and historical merit. Your initiative to evolve the campus into a dynamic heritage center is both timely and fitting."
The exchange between the Speaker and the Union Minister follows their meeting on June 3, where they discussed ongoing development projects.
During this dialogue, the Speaker had requested the Ministry’s partnership in converting the Assembly campus into a nationally acknowledged heritage site.
Speaker Gupta had previously reached out to Shekhawat on May 13, proposing the development of the Delhi Assembly Building—a prominent structure built in 1912—as a heritage hub.
This communication also included a plea for the Ministry’s aid in drafting a detailed project report for the initiative, according to an official statement.
Encouraging advances were made during a follow-up meeting chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat on May 23, marking a significant leap forward in their cooperation.
Shekhawat has now guaranteed all possible assistance from the Ministry and is anticipated to visit the Delhi Assembly soon, accompanied by senior officials, to evaluate the project and extend the required support to actualize this visionary endeavor, as per the statement.
