New Delhi, April 20 (NationPress) The Delhi BJP has called upon Municipal Commissioner Ashwani Kumar to establish a ‘Dangerous Buildings Department’ to classify all structures featuring fifth and sixth floors as hazardous. The party demands the demolition of these floors and necessary measures to suspend the sale and registration of such buildings.

Party spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor criticized remarks from leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party concerning the recent building collapse in Mustafabad, which resulted in the death of 11 individuals, deeming them deceptive and attributing the blame to the party for endorsing illegal constructions.

As per the building regulations of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, only three-story buildings, inclusive of the ground floor, are authorized in the city.

“Nevertheless, in predominantly Muslim areas throughout Delhi, the construction of fourth floors is prevalent. Nearly three-quarters of these buildings have also added fifth and sixth floors,” he mentioned.

From 2015 to 2025, illegal constructions have thrived in these Muslim-majority neighborhoods with the support of AAP MLAs and councilors. These regions have witnessed a lack of enforcement from both the police and the Municipal Corporation regarding illegal construction, he pointed out.

The last decade illustrates that any attempts by the MCD to address illegal fifth and sixth-floor constructions were met with fierce resistance from AAP MLAs such as Haji Yunus, Abdul Rehman, Amanatullah Khan, Imran Hussain, Somdutt, and Shoaib Iqbal, who rallied aggressive crowds against such actions, Kapoor asserted.

He further stated that there are thousands of dilapidated structures in Delhi that result in fatal incidents each year.

Establishing a Dangerous Buildings Department within the MCD would simplify the process of preventing tragedies and facilitate the demolition of these unsafe buildings.

Earlier today, the AAP demanded compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each of the 11 deceased individuals from Mustafabad.

Delhi Mayor Mahesh Khichi and AAP spokesperson Adil Ahmad Khan, while addressing the media, called for stringent action against officials negligent in monitoring illegal constructions within the building that collapsed on Saturday.

Khichi added, "I am composing a letter to the MCD Commissioner urging the suspension of officials found culpable of permitting illegal construction."
