New Delhi, February 25 (NationPress) Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of Delhi has responded to the reported incident of racial harassment in Malviya Nagar, emphasizing that any form of misconduct directed at individuals from the Northeast residing in the capital will not be accepted. She assured that strict measures will be taken against those accountable.
This case involves three women from Arunachal Pradesh who reportedly faced racial insults, humiliation, and intimidation from their neighbors, named Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain, in the Malviya Nagar locality of South Delhi.
As per reports, the confrontation took place on February 20, triggered by a disagreement concerning repair work at the women’s rented home. During this altercation, the neighbors allegedly used offensive language, referring to the women as “dhandhewali (sex worker).”
In connection with this case, Delhi Police apprehended the accused couple five days post the alleged incident.
In a video statement shared on X, CM Gupta remarked, “In Malviya Nagar, some individuals behaved poorly towards our North-East sisters. I became aware of this incident after being tagged in videos by some influencers. I will meet these sisters soon.”
She stressed that residents from every region of the nation, including the Northeast, possess equal rights in the capital.
“I wish to express that individuals from all over the country, including those from the Northeast, possess equal rights in Delhi, the nation’s capital. Today, as people from various states come to Delhi to work diligently to improve their lives, they contribute significantly to the city. No misconduct against them will be tolerated,” stated CM Gupta.
Reaffirming her administration’s strong position, she added, “Those responsible for this will face severe consequences. I not only plan to meet these sisters but also intend to engage with other North-East brothers and sisters to listen to their concerns and provide solutions. Should any policy be required, we will formulate it. For any issues or suggestions, please feel free to DM me directly.”
Meanwhile, relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been invoked regarding the case, based on the available evidence.
“The investigation is currently being managed by an officer of ACP rank. Further inquiries are ongoing and are under the close supervision of senior officials,” the authorities stated.
Delhi Police confirmed that an FIR has been filed against the couple under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, encompassing provisions related to outraging a woman’s modesty and inciting enmity based on religion, race, and other factors.
