New Delhi, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Delhi Police have taken action by apprehending a couple involved in a case of racial harassment targeting three women from Arunachal Pradesh in the Malviya Nagar area, as confirmed by officials on Wednesday.
Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain have been detained, with more details expected to follow. Their arrests occurred five days post-incident.
The case has invoked relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, based on the evidence available.
According to officials, an ACP-rank officer is now overseeing the investigation, which is under close supervision from senior authorities.
Reports indicate that the three women from Arunachal Pradesh were subjected to racial slurs and intimidation by their neighbors, Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain, in Malviya Nagar.
On February 20, following a disagreement regarding repair work at their rented flat, the neighbors allegedly referred to the women as "dhandhewali (sex worker)." The women had hired an electrician to install an air-conditioning unit in their fourth-floor apartment.
The police stated that debris from the drilling work fell onto the floor below, leading to complaints from the neighbors, which escalated into a confrontation.
The women accused the couple of using abusive and derogatory language, including racial insults aimed at them and the Northeastern community. A video capturing the incident later circulated widely on social media.
The Delhi Police confirmed that an FIR has been filed against the couple under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, encompassing provisions related to degrading a woman’s modesty and inciting hostility based on religion, race, and other factors.
In response, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu condemned the alleged racial harassment of the three women from the state in South Delhi and called on the Delhi Commissioner of Police to take prompt and stringent measures in this matter.
Additionally, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Congress Lok Sabha member from Inner Manipur Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, LS member from Sikkim Indra Hang Subba, along with numerous political leaders, personalities, and organizations have also denounced the incident and demanded strict action against the accused.
