Key Takeaways
New Delhi/Itanagar, Feb 24 (NationPress) Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has issued a strong condemnation regarding the reported racial abuse and humiliation of three women hailing from the state in South Delhi. He has called upon the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, to ensure immediate and rigorous action is taken regarding this incident.
Joining him in this condemnation are Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Congress Lok Sabha representative from Inner Manipur Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, and Lok Sabha member from Sikkim Indra Hang Subba, along with numerous other political leaders, public figures, and organizations who have collectively demanded severe consequences for the offenders.
In a post on the social media platform X, CM Khandu expressed: “I strongly condemn the disgraceful incident of racial abuse directed at our three young sisters from Arunachal Pradesh living in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi. Such conduct is utterly unacceptable and should not be tolerated in our society.”
“Upon becoming aware of the incident yesterday, I reached out to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi Police, and requested immediate and stringent action. The Commissioner is in direct communication with me. The accused are currently evading capture, but I have been assured they will be apprehended swiftly and dealt with according to the law. We stand united with our three sisters, prioritizing their safety, dignity, and justice,” the Chief Minister stated.
Meghalaya CM and National People’s Party (NPP) leader Sangma also emphasized on X: “The racial discrimination and sexual harassment faced by women from the North East should not merely become a headline, sensationalized, forgotten, and only revisited with new incidents.”
“The racial and sexual harassment of a resident doctor from Nagaland at AIIMS Gorakhpur is profoundly shameful. Violating a woman’s dignity is not something a civilized nation should accept. They are your sisters and daughters too. I implore the authorities to enforce strict measures against the culprits,” he added.
Reports indicate that three women from Arunachal Pradesh faced racial slurs, humiliation, and intimidation from their neighbors at Malviya Nagar. On February 20, following a dispute over repair work in their rented flat, the neighbors allegedly referred to the women as “dhandhewali (sex worker).” The women had hired an electrician to install an air conditioner in their fourth-floor residence.
According to police sources, dust and debris from the drilling work fell onto the floor below, prompting complaints from neighbors, which led to the situation escalating quickly.
The women claimed that a couple from the neighborhood hurled insults and made derogatory, racial comments targeted at them and the Northeastern community. A video capturing the incident subsequently went viral on social media.
The Delhi Police confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against the couple under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including provisions related to violating a woman’s modesty and inciting enmity based on religion, race, and other factors.
In another racially charged incident, on December 9, Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, was brutally attacked in Dehradun and succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after fighting for his life for 18 days. Six attackers allegedly first assaulted Angel’s younger brother, Michael Chakma, and when Angel stepped in to defend him, he faced brutal violence.
Angel’s family is demanding a CBI investigation into the case. The Uttarakhand Police have detained five of the six suspects involved, while the primary accused remains at large. The police have offered a reward of Rs one lakh and have issued a lookout notice and a Blue Corner Notice for the absconding suspect, who is believed to have fled to Nepal. High-level coordination is ongoing to ensure his capture.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has repeatedly communicated with his Uttarakhand counterpart Pushkar Singh Dhami, advocating for decisive action against all individuals associated with the crime.
