New Delhi/Itanagar, Feb 24 (NationPress) Union Minister for the Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, expressed significant concern on Tuesday over a disturbing incident of alleged racial harassment that involved three young women from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi. He labeled the incident as "profoundly shameful" and "unacceptable".
The Union Minister emphasized that prejudice, intimidation, and discrimination have no place in our society and must be addressed decisively.
Scindia communicated directly with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, urging for immediate and stringent action, as stated in an official release.
He received assurances that strict measures would be implemented and that the suspects would be swiftly apprehended.
Reaffirming the Union government's dedication to the safety and security of women, Scindia remarked that any form of injustice against citizens from the Northeastern region would be met with zero tolerance and that their safety and dignity are of utmost importance.
Earlier on the same day, Chief Minister Pema Khandu vehemently condemned the alleged racial abuse and humiliation faced by the three women in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, and urged the Delhi Police Commissioner to ensure quick and firm action.
Political leaders from various parties also denounced the incident, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Congress Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, and Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, alongside numerous organizations and public figures.
Reports indicate that the three women were subjected to racial slurs, humiliation, and intimidation by their neighbors in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar following a dispute regarding repair work at their rented accommodation on February 20.
According to police, dust and debris from drilling work fell to the floor below, provoking objections that escalated into a confrontation.
A video of the incident subsequently went viral on social media.
The Delhi Police confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the accused under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including clauses pertaining to outraging the modesty of a woman and promoting enmity based on religion, race, and other factors.
In a related incident, reports referenced the December 9 assault on Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA final-year student from Tripura, in Dehradun, who tragically succumbed to his injuries on December 26.
The Uttarakhand Police have apprehended five of the six suspects, while the main perpetrator remains at large.
A reward of Rs one lakh has been announced, and efforts to secure the primary accused's arrest include a lookout notice and a Blue Corner Notice.
