New Delhi, Oct 14 (NationPress) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday that the government has chosen to eliminate the late payment surcharge for domestic water consumers. A full 100% discount will be granted on the settlement of outstanding bills until January 31, 2026.
“Today, the ‘Late Payment Surcharge Waiver Scheme’ and the ‘Unauthorised Connection Regularisation Scheme’ were inaugurated. Both initiatives will provide considerable relief to Delhi residents and aim to enhance the public-friendly and transparent water management system,” she stated.
In a message on X, CM Gupta remarked, “The government has significantly reduced the penalty for unauthorised domestic consumers from Rs 25,000 to merely Rs 1,000, and for commercial connections, it has dropped from Rs 61,000 to Rs 5,000. This decision will also facilitate the connection of millions of consumers to upcoming schemes and ensure a consistent water supply.”
She emphasized that while enhancing and modernizing the Delhi Jal Board’s infrastructure, the capital’s water distribution system is being transformed to be more efficient, accountable, and technology-driven via a new billing system, transparent revenue management, and the establishment of 34 new divisions.
CM Gupta criticized the previous AAP government for limiting the powers of the DJB and hindering progress.
“Nearly half of Delhi relies on unauthorised water pipe connections in unplanned colonies. Previously, files for development projects would just circulate without any actual work being done,” CM Gupta mentioned.
During the event, Delhi government’s Cabinet Minister Pravesh Verma was also present, highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the city's water supply system.
Earlier in the day, CM Gupta visited the New Delhi Railway Station to review new facilities for passengers ahead of the Chhath festival.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister stated, “Considering the safety, convenience, and seamless travel of passengers, a new modern passenger facility centre has been inaugurated at New Delhi Railway Station.”
This initiative represents a significant move towards making Indian Railways more modern, organized, and focused on serving the public,” she added.
