Is Delhi CM Rekha Gupta's Rs 800 crore plan for 241 roads the solution to potholes and dust?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 17 (NationPress) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta revealed on Tuesday that over 241 major roads, covering a distance of 400 km, will undergo a comprehensive redevelopment utilizing a ‘wall-to-wall carpeting’ technique to eradicate potholes and dust, with an investment totaling Rs 802.18 crore.
The Chief Minister emphasized that with robust backing from the Central government, this initiative aims to transform Delhi’s roads into a pothole-free and durable network.
She characterized the ‘wall-to-wall carpeting’ approach as a pivotal step towards enhancing safety, organization, and future readiness in the capital.
The initiative will enhance nearly 400 kilometers of roads across 45 Assembly constituencies, as per an official statement.
Out of the overall investment, Rs 643.36 crore will be sourced from the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) provided by the Central government, while the Delhi government's contribution will be Rs 158.82 crore.
The Chief Minister pointed out that traditionally, only the central areas of roads or isolated potholes receive repairs, which leads to rapid deterioration.
With the new model, entire road sections will be uniformly reinforced from edge to edge, which will enhance their longevity and resilience.
She also mentioned that approximately 150 kilometers of roads were constructed in Delhi last year using the same technology.
A fully leveled and sealed surface across the entire width is expected to significantly reduce dust and air pollution, she noted.
Damaged roads produce loose soil and fine particles that become airborne through vehicle movement, greatly contributing to pollution levels. The new strategy will aid in decreasing particulate matter (PM) concentrations, thereby improving cleanliness and air quality in adjacent areas, as stated.
The project is set to be completed by year-end, with work being scheduled in phases to minimize traffic disruptions and public inconvenience. The Public Works Department (PWD) of the Delhi government will carry out the project across about 45 Assembly constituencies.
Identified roads for upgrade include August Kranti Marg in Malviya Nagar, Outer Ring Road, Rao Tula Ram Marg, Kapashera-Bijwasan Road, Najafgarh-Jharoda Road, Captain Gaur Marg in Kalkaji, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg in Greater Kailash, Dr K.N. Katju Marg in Rohini, Shamnath Marg in Chandni Chowk, D.B. Gupta Road in Karol Bagh, ESI Hospital Road in Shahdara, Tanga Stand Road in Seemapuri, Preet Vihar Road, Patparganj Road, Khichripur Road, Khudiram Bose Road, Khajuri Flyover, Gokalpuri Flyover, Zero Pusta Road, Seelampur Road, and Loni Road, among others.
The Chief Minister underscored that the partnership between the Centre and State is providing a new impetus to Delhi’s infrastructure.
She clarified that the goal is not just repair work but establishing a lasting solution. Each road will be subject to a technical assessment of its base layer, necessary reinforcements, proper drainage arrangements, and final carpeting following established standards.
This initiative is also expected to mitigate waterlogging during monsoon seasons and ensure the long-term safety of the roads.
