Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) The Crime Branch of Delhi has successfully captured a notorious sharpshooter along with an arms supplier associated with the infamous Kapil Sangwan gang, commonly referred to as the Nandu Gang, as reported by officials on Sunday.
A specialized unit of the Delhi Police Crime Branch apprehended the suspect, Sumit Punia, a 25-year-old from Mahendergarh district in Haryana. He was discovered with a highly advanced country-made pistol and five live cartridges in his possession.
Authorities indicated that a formal case has been lodged, and further investigations, including record checks, uncovered that the suspect had been evading capture related to an encounter case.
In-depth inquiries into his criminal history and prolonged questioning revealed that Punia originates from a village adjacent to that of the notorious gangster Kapil Sangwan, having known him since childhood, where they played kabaddi together.
“Sumit Punia informed us that he completed his 10th grade but dropped out of school due to disinterest. Between 2020 and 2021, he became part of Kapil Sangwan’s gang, taking on the role of an active shooter. He also mentioned that in November 2025, he was apprehended for illegal arms possession at PS Nizampur, District Mahendergarh, Haryana, and remained in judicial custody,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police, Harsh Indora.
“Punia is linked to three other criminal cases filed across police stations in Delhi and Haryana. He has a close relationship with the infamous gangster Kapil Sangwan, alias Nandu, due to their shared village background in District Mahendergarh, Haryana,” he added.
Following the arrest of Punia, police, acting on his disclosures, also captured the alleged arms supplier, identified as Badar Saifi, a 32-year-old from Bulandshahr district in Uttar Pradesh. He too was found with a sophisticated country-made pistol.
Authorities stated that Saifi was deeply involved in providing illegal firearms to the gang, which were utilized by its members to threaten victims who declined to pay extortion fees.
Officials have assigned the Crime Branch the responsibility of targeting shooters, arms suppliers, and members of organized crime gangs. Both manual and technological surveillance methods were utilized to monitor the suspects.
During the operation, Head Constable Pawan Kumar gathered specific intelligence, subsequently verified through technical analysis by Sub-Inspector Ravi Bhushan. Continuous efforts over the past month were made to identify and arrest the suspects.
Surveillance information confirmed that Sumit Punia, an associated sharpshooter of the Nandu Gang, was located in the Dwarka area of New Delhi. Due to the severity of the charges and the danger posed by the suspect, a dedicated Crime Branch team was formed.
Led by Inspector Gautam Malik, the team included SI Ravi Bhushan, SI Kuldeep, HC Sonu, HC Pawan Kumar, and Constable Mukesh. The operation was conducted under the supervision of ACP Raj Pal Dabas and the overall guidance of DCP Harsh Indora.
Promptly acting on the intelligence gathered, the team arrested Sumit Punia in Dwarka, recovering a sophisticated country-made semi-automatic star pistol along with five live cartridges from him.
During the ongoing investigation, based on Punia’s revelations, another suspect, identified as Badar Islam, was also captured in Bulandshahr.
