Synopsis
Key Takeaways
On March 2, 2023, in New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a series of welfare programs aimed at benefiting women, including the 'Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana' and the 'Meri Poonji, Mera Adhikar' scheme, which features a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) of Rs 100 crore for over 40,000 girls. They also introduced the 'Saheli Pink Smart Card', providing women with free bus travel across the national capital.
The launch, held at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, was graced by notable figures such as Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and MLA Pankaj Singh.
Through the 'Meri Poonji, Mera Adhikar' initiative, a total of Rs 100 crore has been directly deposited into the bank accounts of 40,642 girls in Delhi, marking one of the most extensive DBT initiatives for girl beneficiaries in the region. This program is part of the revamped and enhanced 'Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana', which replaces the previous Ladli Scheme.
President Murmu emphasized her belief that these new schemes would significantly uplift women and girls in Delhi. "I am confident that these initiatives will empower the sisters and daughters of Delhi, contributing to a prosperous future for the city. I commend Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and her team for their dedication to this cause," she stated.
Chief Minister Gupta called the day historic, asserting that these initiatives would be remembered for generations to come. "Today marks a significant milestone, and future generations will remember this day as one of trust and empowerment for daughters, from birth to self-reliance," she remarked.
Gupta highlighted the broader vision driving these schemes, referencing the Prime Minister's call for Nari Shakti Vandan and the belief that a developed nation is rooted in women's empowerment. This direction has been embraced by the Delhi government as they take substantial steps forward.
The revised 'Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana' considerably amplifies the financial aid offered under the old Ladli Scheme. Previously, Rs 11,000 was credited for institutional births and Rs 10,000 for home births, along with Rs 5,000 at significant educational milestones such as Class 1, 6, 9 admissions, and Class 10 and 12 completions.
In this new framework, both the financial assistance and the overarching goal have been greatly expanded, ensuring that beneficiary girls build substantial savings by adulthood.
This scheme is designed for families earning up to Rs 1.20 lakh annually, who have lived in Delhi for a minimum of three years, with the girl child needing to have been born in Delhi to qualify.
Additionally, the government introduced the 'Saheli Pink Smart Card', which allows women to travel for free on public buses throughout the capital, enhancing their mobility and access to education and job opportunities. This initiative is expected to further promote women's engagement in the workforce and public life.
Officials noted that these initiatives, along with other welfare efforts like the free gas cylinder program during festivals, underscore the government's commitment to social security and the financial empowerment of women and girls.
Chief Minister Gupta reiterated that the scheme is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of placing daughters at the forefront of nation-building through education, dignity, and self-reliance, asserting the Delhi government’s commitment to actualizing that vision.
