Delhi's Groundbreaking 'Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana' Launch Tomorrow: Providing 2 Free LPG Cylinders
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 1 (NationPress) In a significant move aimed at empowering women economically, President Droupadi Murmu will officially inaugurate the Delhi government's 'Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana' on Monday. This initiative will provide two free LPG cylinders during Holi and Diwali for 15 lakh economically disadvantaged families, according to an official announcement made on Sunday.
A special event named 'Sashakt Nari, Samriddh Delhi' is set to take place at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Monday, where these schemes, along with others, will be unveiled by President Murmu, the official confirmed.
Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that this event represents the government's unwavering commitment to women's empowerment.
The initiative is organized by the Department of Women and Child Development.
Chief Minister Gupta noted that given the evolving landscape and the escalating costs of higher education, an effective and forward-thinking program for girls was imperative.
“With this vision in mind, the existing Ladli Scheme has been expanded and revamped into the 'Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana',” she stated.
“Previously, an amount of Rs 11,000 was deposited for each eligible girl child born in institutions, and Rs 10,000 for home births. Additionally, Rs 5,000 was deposited at significant educational milestones such as admission to Classes 1, 6, and 9, as well as passing Class 10 and enrolling in Class 12. The total amount, with interest, could be accessed at the age of 18,” she explained.
Chief Minister Gupta clarified that under the new scheme, both the financial support and the overall vision have been substantially improved.
“A total of Rs 56,000 will now be deposited in stages in the girl child's name, and with accrued interest, the maturity amount is projected to exceed Rs 1 lakh upon reaching the age of 21,” she added.
The aim is to make graduation or obtaining a professional diploma the standard rather than the exception, according to Chief Minister Gupta.
“The new scheme will be entirely digital. The funds will be managed by SBI Life Insurance Company Limited and invested under the SBI Life Dhanrashi Sadhan,” she further elaborated.
“The deposited amount will grow with the girl's age, and upon maturity, the entire accumulated sum will be directly transferred to the beneficiary's Aadhaar-linked bank account, ensuring transparency and direct financial inclusion,” the Chief Minister noted.
“The scheme will be available to families with an annual income not exceeding Rs 1.20 lakh and who have been residents of Delhi for the last three years. The girl child must be born in Delhi. Registration can be completed within one year of birth or at specified educational milestones. The benefits will be capped at two living girl children per family,” the official statement disclosed.
“The program has been broadened to include girls pursuing graduation or professional diplomas at any government-recognized or UGC-accredited institution in India. The maturity benefits will only be payable upon meeting educational requirements,” it added.
Chief Minister Gupta stated that the initiative is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader vision, which aims to position daughters at the heart of nation-building through education, dignity, and self-reliance.
According to Chief Minister Gupta, the provision of two free LPG cylinders each year will be facilitated through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
“An amount equal to the current price of one LPG cylinder will be credited to the Aadhaar-linked bank account of the family head in whose name the ration card is issued,” she mentioned.
“The scheme is anticipated to impact approximately 15.5 lakh families holding ration cards. It seeks to alleviate the financial burden of cooking fuel expenses and enable families to celebrate festivals with dignity and ease,” she concluded.
