Delhi Police arrests 5 in ₹19.50 lakh robbery; recovers ₹9 lakh cash, iPhone
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Delhi Police's North District has arrested five accused in connection with a ₹19.50 lakh robbery case registered at Kashmere Gate Police Station, recovering ₹9 lakh in cash and an iPhone purchased with the stolen money. The operation follows a brazen daylight heist on 30 September on the Rani Jhansi flyover in New Delhi.
How the Robbery Unfolded
The victims — two men employed by a businessman in Chandni Chowk — were travelling on separate motorcycles and carrying the cash after leaving the area. According to police, a man who worked in Chandni Chowk had tracked their movements and subsequently coordinated the robbery with four associates from Ghaziabad.
The accused first intercepted the victims near Kashmere Gate, assaulted them, and attempted to rob them. Bystanders intervened, allowing the victims to escape. No emergency call was made at that stage. Undeterred, the accused followed the victims and struck again on the Rani Jhansi flyover, where they overpowered the men and seized the cash.
Investigation and Arrests
A special team led by North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Niharika Bhatt launched an investigation and traced all five accused. Police recovered ₹9 lakh in cash — roughly half the stolen amount — along with an iPhone the accused had bought using the looted funds. Efforts are continuing to identify and apprehend any remaining accomplices.
Separate Kashmere Gate Robbery Leaves One Dead
In a distinct but geographically linked case, police had on 30 September arrested a 21-year-old and his 24-year-old associate, and apprehended a juvenile, for their alleged role in the killing of a cash collection agent during an armed robbery at an underpass in north Delhi.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range) Madhur Verma said the victim, identified as Prabhat, was returning home with his nephew Sachin after collecting payments from shops in Gandhi Nagar Market when four armed men intercepted their e-rickshaw at around 7.20 pm on 24 September. The assailants snatched their cash bag and stabbed Prabhat, Sachin, and another passenger when they resisted. Prabhat was declared dead at hospital; two others sustained injuries.
DCP Niharika Bhatt said investigators traced a Maruti Swift that had made a sharp U-turn near the underpass, though the vehicle's displayed registration number turned out to be fake — a detail that underlines the degree of pre-planning involved.
Pattern of Targeted Cash Robberies in North Delhi
Both incidents point to a pattern of criminals specifically targeting individuals known to be carrying large sums of cash — a recurring problem in north Delhi's busy commercial corridors. The Chandni Chowk and Gandhi Nagar markets are high-turnover trade hubs where cash transactions remain common, making cash carriers vulnerable. Police have not yet confirmed whether the two cases are linked to the same network.
With arrests made and partial recovery secured, investigators are now focused on tracing the remaining stolen amount and closing in on any additional suspects.
