New Delhi, Nov 27 (NationPress) The Delhi Police has acknowledged activist Bharti Chaturvedi's troubling account shared on social media about her frustrating experience of receiving no assistance for hours from both the police and Uber while attempting to report a complaint against a cab driver.
Her narrative, which has gone viral on X, underscores another alarming instance of escalating lawlessness in the national capital and the ongoing failure of emergency services to assist women in crisis.
Chaturvedi recounted that she had ordered an Uber to travel from Vasant Vihar to Sarvodaya Enclave. When the location pin became inactive near Essex Farms, the driver initially agreed to proceed, but soon became agitated, raised his voice, and unexpectedly turned the vehicle when she requested a U-turn.
Upon asking him to stop, he allegedly refused. In a desperate move, she had to open the door to exit the ride, at which point the driver reportedly grabbed her arm and twisted it.
She mentioned that she promptly called 100 but received no answer. When she contacted Uber Safety, she was advised to "call 100 again". An Uber representative named Sanjana informed her that the team would "assess action", a response she deemed unacceptable.
In her post, she tagged the Delhi Police and inquired, "How can women reach out for help when needed?"
She also noted that the driver had not charged her for the ride.
Hours later, following the viral attention of her post and her email to the Delhi Police Commissioner, the Delhi Police finally responded on X, stating that they had taken cognisance of the matter and were investigating. They also sent her a direct message asking for more details.
Uber released a public statement expressing concern, stating, "This is very alarming. Such behaviour is absolutely not tolerated, and your safety is our priority. Please provide specific trip details and contact information via Direct Message. Our safety team will reach out to you shortly."
Chaturvedi contested Uber's statement, explaining that she had already communicated with their safety team. "I contacted your safety team. They had my information. Sanjana is planning a meeting, deliberating whether the issue is serious enough, while assuring me that Uber prioritizes my safety. Please coordinate internally or let me know if you need my details again," she remarked.
The situation rapidly escalated into a political matter, with Congress leaders including Devendra Yadav and Abhishek Dutt referencing her post and urging the Delhi Police to take swift and appropriate action.
