New Delhi, Sep 11 (NationPress) In a remarkable achievement for the K-9 (Dog Squad) unit, Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha unveiled the official emblem of the Dog Squad (K-9 Unit) on Thursday. This significant event took place at the Delhi Police Headquarters in New Delhi, attended by senior officers from the Delhi Police.

The newly introduced emblem symbolizes the elite status and unwavering commitment of the Dog Squad in safeguarding the National Capital. It will henceforth be prominently featured on the uniforms, jackets, and gear of all personnel within the K-9 Unit.

Established in 1967, the Dog Squad (K-9 Unit) operates as a premier unit under the supervision of the Crime Branch.

The highly trained dogs in the K-9 Unit are deployed throughout the capital to aid in crime detection, as well as in identifying explosives and narcotics, along with other critical operations that demand precision and agility. Given the sensitive nature of these animals, the K-9 Unit maintains the highest standards of care, ensuring a healthy, hygienic, and stress-free environment to enhance performance and public safety.

Core responsibilities of the K-9 include Tracker Dogs, which are utilized at crime scenes to track down and recover stolen items or identify suspects through scent evidence.

Explosive Detection Dogs are employed for anti-sabotage checks at public venues, VIP/VVIP routes, and significant events, ensuring the safety of both dignitaries and the public.

Narcotics Detection Dogs play a crucial role in identifying illegal substances in homes, vehicles, luggage, and on individuals suspected of drug trafficking or possession.

The Dog Squad currently operates from ten key locations across Delhi, which include: PS Model Town, Chanakyapuri, PS Kalyanpuri, PS Daryaganj, PS Sabzi Mandi, PS Maurya Enclave, Sector-12 R.K. Puram, Sector-16A Dwarka, PS Janakpuri, and Pushp Vihar.

The K-9 Unit is instrumental in urban security, regularly conducting patrols and anti-sabotage checks at markets, malls, transport hubs, and other vital installations.

During high-security events such as Independence Day, Republic Day, and visits from national and international dignitaries, the K-9 Unit is deployed to various significant locations, including Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Supreme Court, Vigyan Bhawan, Hyderabad House, and other strategic venues.

Handlers and dogs in the K-9 Unit receive training alongside premier institutions like the NSG, BSF, CRPF, and the Delhi Police Academy, continuously enhancing their capabilities in explosive and contraband detection.
