Currently, these dogs are in training at the Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA) located in Moinabad, Hyderabad.
The announcement was made by Additional Director General of Police (CID) Parasnath during a press briefing at Sardar Patel Bhawan, the Police Headquarters, on Wednesday.
Parasnath stated that the new recruits are expected to join the force within the next two to three months.
At present, the Bihar Police dog squad comprises 67 dogs, and with the addition of this new batch, the total will increase to 97.
The squad is authorized to maintain a strength of 200 dogs.
Furthermore, the ADG revealed that the process of acquiring an additional 50 dogs from Home Guard Training Institutes in Punjab is also in progress.
Once these dogs are trained at IITA, they will be inducted, potentially raising the squad's total strength to 147 by the end of the year.
The current roster of 67 dogs includes 19 explosive detection dogs, 21 tracker dogs, 21 alcohol detection dogs, and 6 drug detection dogs.
The breeds in service include 55 Labradors, 2 Golden Retrievers, 6 Belgian Malinois, and 4 German Shepherds.
These dogs are strategically stationed across various police range headquarters and districts.
ADG Parasnath emphasized that the trained dogs are essential in crime investigations, narcotics and explosives detection, as well as ensuring security during VVIP events.
Recently, their role in tracking illegal liquor has also significantly increased.
“Given the growing utility of trained dogs in policing, we are continuously striving to strengthen and expand the dog squad,” he stated.
IG (CID) Daljit Singh and other senior officials attended the press conference and expressed their approval of the department's initiative to enhance the dog squad's capabilities in the Bihar police.
Officials aim to have at least three to four specialized dogs in each district.
