Former Delhi HC Judge Critiques IYC Protest Impacting India's Global Standing

Key Takeaways
Noida, Feb 24 (NationPress) Former Delhi High Court Justice S.N. Dhingra raised alarms on Tuesday regarding the demonstration by members of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) during the recent AI summit. He pointed out that the timing, location, and nature of the protest could potentially undermine national dignity and may have legal repercussions.
In an interview with IANS, Justice Dhingra (retd) stated that while the right to protest is a cornerstone of democracy, the manner in which it is executed—especially during a significant international event—can pose serious concerns.
"While protesting is a democratic privilege, organizing it in a way that tarnishes national honour, particularly in the presence of global leaders and business executives, is concerning. It also raises legal issues," he remarked.
He highlighted that the summit saw participation from Prime Ministers and Presidents of around 20 nations, in addition to CEOs, diplomats, and international delegates, making it a crucial diplomatic and economic forum rather than just a political assembly.
Dhingra warned that disruptions at such business-centric events could negatively impact the investment atmosphere and international partnerships. "If this were a political summit, the protest might have been more justifiable. However, this was a business-focused event centered on artificial intelligence and its implications for the future," he elaborated.
The former judge further emphasized that freedom of expression and national interest can coexist, but dissent should not be framed in a way that appears antagonistic to the nation. He acknowledged that while criticizing the government or a political party is a rightful democratic action, behaviors that seem detrimental to national interests may attract legal examination.
Dhingra also noted that law enforcement agencies apply relevant provisions based on the situation, while the courts ultimately assess their legality.
Reiterating the importance of decorum at high-profile international events, he asserted that disorderly conduct at these gatherings impacts India’s global perception. "International delegates observe not only the government's actions but also the behaviour of opposition factions and the public. Their perceptions shape the global viewpoint of India," he concluded.
