Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 13 (NationPress) The implementation of digital consumer grievance redressal systems has the potential to significantly enhance access to consumer justice in the rural and widely dispersed regions of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha, according to Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, during her address on Tuesday.
Speaking at the 'Regional Workshop on Consumer Protection for Eastern States' in Patna, Khare emphasized the essential reforms initiated by the Department of Consumer Affairs aimed at modernizing the grievance redressal framework throughout the nation.
Khare pointed out the increasingly vital role of the National Consumer Helpline (NCH 2.0), which serves as a pre-litigation platform, offering multi-lingual support, online complaint submissions, and rapid resolutions facilitated by technology.
She also outlined the nationwide launch of E-Jagriti (CONFONET 2.0), a singular integrated digital platform designed for Consumer Commissions. E-Jagriti consolidates e-Daakhil, online case management, video conferencing, data dashboards, and AI-driven tools, creating a comprehensive digital workflow for consumer issues.
“E-Jagriti represents a transition from fragmented systems to a transparent, efficient, and real-time digital ecosystem, which allows for superior monitoring and swifter case resolutions,” she stated, encouraging state and district consumer commissions to fully embrace video hearings, automated case management tools, and performance dashboards to minimize delays and guarantee prompt execution of orders.
Additionally, she discussed the importance of bolstering domestic production and procurement of pulses, noting a trend toward increased household consumption of pulses over cereals.
Pratyaya Amrit, Chief Secretary of the Bihar Government, stressed that citizens should be recognized not merely as beneficiaries, but as consumers entitled to clear information, fair treatment, and timely grievance resolution. He commended initiatives like E-Jagriti and expressed optimism that discussions surrounding emerging issues such as dark patterns would yield beneficial outcomes.
The workshop concentrated on strategies to reduce case backlogs, enhance compliance with consumer commission orders, utilize digital tools for expedited justice, and tackle emerging challenges such as dark patterns and unfair trade practices in the digital marketplace.
