Indore, Sep 27 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Digvijaya Singh has publicly criticized the detention of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, asserting that the current BJP-led Central government is misusing the National Security Act (NSA).

While addressing journalists in Indore, Singh emphasized that Wangchuk has consistently adhered to Gandhian principles and has dedicated himself to the betterment of Ladakh, its rich culture, and its heritage.

"Sonam Wangchuk has been instrumental in establishing an identity for Ladakh and has contributed significantly through education and healthcare initiatives. It is concerning that the NSA has been invoked against someone who embodies Mahatma Gandhi's ideology," he remarked.

Additionally, Singh pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi once praised Wangchuk for his efforts, yet imposed the NSA following Wangchuk's calls for statehood for Ladakh.

Wangchuk's recent arrest occurred after a protest escalated into violence in Leh on September 24, leading to the BJP office being set ablaze.

Just two days after four individuals lost their lives in protests, Wangchuk was detained under the NSA.

"The demand for Ladakh to be recognized as a Union Territory was accepted by the government. Now, the people of Ladakh are seeking the Sixth Schedule—similar rights granted to the Northeast. Although the Union government promised statehood and the Sixth Schedule after elections, this promise remains unfulfilled," Singh added.

During his visit to Indore, Singh also claimed that incidents of communal violence have surged under the BJP administration in Madhya Pradesh, with minority communities facing discrimination and intimidation from the local authorities.

At the Sheetlamata Market, controversy arose after BJP MLA Malini Gaur's son, Eklavya Singh Gaur, allegedly instructed shopkeepers to dismiss all Muslim employees.

When Singh attempted to enter the market, he was prevented by local police, prompting him to file a formal complaint at the Indore Superintendent of Police's office, demanding action against Gaur.

Law enforcement informed Singh that a memorandum had been received and that an investigation is underway.

When inquiring about the possibility of an FIR being filed, the official stated, "The matter is under investigation, and further action will be taken as needed."
