Sonam Wangchuk Advocates for Dialogue Following NSA Release
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk stated on Tuesday that the government's readiness to engage in constructive and meaningful dialogue is the primary aim of his movement.
In his first public remarks following his release from detention under the National Security Act, Wangchuk expressed that the invitation for dialogue is a positive step forward and corresponds with the demands he and his supporters have consistently voiced.
“I have always emphasized that I do not wish to undertake a hunger strike. Who cares about being hungry for weeks? I prefer not to fast unless absolutely necessary. When I do, it is out of necessity, and I have unwavering faith,” he stated, referencing the protest tactics he employed during the movement.
He further noted that the legal proceedings and public focus surrounding his case gradually unveiled the realities concerning developments in Ladakh.
“The situation in Ladakh arose due to their actions. However, as the layers were peeled back in the Supreme Court of India, the distinction between truth and falsehood became evident,” he remarked.
Wangchuk, who had been incarcerated under the NSA in Jodhpur Central Jail, also discussed the personal hardships he experienced during his detention.
“In prison, it is perceived that detainees are the most threatening. I faced complete isolation — I did not see a single face that wasn't in uniform,” he shared.
Expressing gratitude towards his legal representatives, Wangchuk mentioned their pro bono assistance instilled confidence that justice would be served.
“Thanks to our incredible team of lawyers who supported us pro bono as a social responsibility, we were confident of a favorable outcome in court,” he added.
He also extended his appreciation to supporters nationwide, highlighting that their attention and solidarity were crucial to the resolution.
“I want to sincerely thank everyone. It was due to all the support and love that much of what has occurred came to be,” he added, noting that many others face similar accusations and deserve comparable attention.
Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, called on the public to transcend the binary narrative of victory or defeat and concentrate on dialogue.
“We should move beyond the discourse of winning and losing. This isn’t about submission to anyone,” she remarked.
Angmo underscored that perseverance and truth ultimately yield favorable results. “My belief has always been that diligent effort bears fruit, resilience has a positive conclusion, and truth ultimately prevails,” she stated.
She expressed optimism that significant discussions with authorities would soon occur to seek a sustainable resolution for Ladakh.
“We will converse and comprehend why certain things are unfeasible. The discussions that used to take an extended time will soon take place, and we will progress towards the appropriate solution for Ladakh,” she concluded.
Wangchuk was released from Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday after the Government revoked his detention under the National Security Act, kindling hopes for renewed discussions on issues concerning Ladakh’s governance, environment, and development.
