Jammu, March 14 (NationPress) The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced the immediate revocation of the detention of Ladakhi climate advocate, Sonam Wangchuk, under the National Security Act (NSA).
According to the MHA's official statement, the decision to release Wangchuk reflects the government's dedication to nurturing a climate of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh, aimed at promoting constructive discussions with various stakeholders.
“Following careful consideration, the government has opted to lift the detention of Sonam Wangchuk immediately, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring all essential protections for the people of Ladakh,” the statement noted.
Wangchuk's detention occurred on September 26, 2025, in response to a significant law and order crisis that emerged in the peaceful town of Leh on September 24, 2025. He was held under the provisions of the NSA following an order from the District Magistrate of Leh to preserve public order.
“Wangchuk has now served nearly half of his detention period under the mentioned Act,” the MHA added.
The government has been proactively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the expectations and concerns of the local populace.
“However, the current climate of strikes and protests has negatively impacted the peaceful fabric of society, affecting multiple segments of the community, including students, job seekers, businesses, tour operators, tourists, and the overall economy,” the statement continued.
“The Government is steadfast in its commitment to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh, facilitating constructive and meaningful conversations with all parties involved.”
“The government is optimistic that the challenges facing the region will be addressed through constructive engagement and dialogue, utilizing the High-Powered Committee and other relevant forums,” the MHA concluded.
