Chennai, Jan 24 (NationPress) Addressing the ongoing chatter regarding delays in forming alliances prior to the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Premalatha Vijayakanth, the General Secretary of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), stated that there is sufficient time available for the elections. She emphasized that her party will make decisions about alliances at the proper moment.
In a conversation with journalists, Premalatha clarified that the DMDK is not feeling compelled to hurriedly engage in political partnerships and criticized certain media outlets for generating unwarranted speculation.
“Is there a delay in forming an alliance? Has the Election Commission of India announced the election date for Tamil Nadu? Are political parties releasing their candidate lists? We still have plenty of time. It seems the press is the only one eager to learn about alliances,” she remarked.
Using a personal analogy, Premalatha likened the DMDK to “a child” in her care.
“As a mother, I understand my responsibilities. Thus, we will reveal our decision when the time is right,” she noted, stressing that the party's choices will be determined by long-term political strategies rather than immediate pressures.
When asked about the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) commencing its election campaign in Tamil Nadu on January 23, Premalatha indicated that even the NDA's alliance framework is still being finalized.
“I have heard that additional political parties are anticipated to join the NDA coalition,” she stated, suggesting that discussions continue among various political factions.
Commenting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement during the campaign that the countdown for the exit of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government has begun, Premalatha maintained a cautious perspective.
“A new political party will form the government following the elections. We are optimistic it will deliver effective governance for the people of Tamil Nadu,” she said, without specifying any particular alliance or party.
The DMDK had previously participated in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections alongside the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) led by TTV Dhinakaran, but did not succeed. Since then, the party has kept its options open, indicating that its subsequent political moves would be announced when the timing is optimal.
