Chennai, May 4 (NationPress) The Treasurer of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), L.K. Sudhish, has declared that Premalatha Vijayakanth, the party’s general secretary, will determine the future of the party's alliance with AIADMK as the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach.
While addressing the media on Sunday, Sudhish stated, “We maintained our partnership with the AIADMK during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, even after their withdrawal from the BJP-led NDA. With the AIADMK's return to the NDA fold, a significant political reshaping is in progress. The timing of our decision regarding this alliance will be announced by our general secretary at an appropriate moment.”
He mentioned that a pivotal party meeting is set to take place in Cuddalore on May 9, where an official statement regarding the DMDK's alliance strategy is anticipated.
“Our general secretary will outline the party's future direction, including possible alliances, at the Cuddalore gathering,” he confirmed.
Sudhish also noted that during discussions regarding the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the AIADMK had assured the DMDK a Rajya Sabha seat.
“This assurance is valid. It was based on this commitment that I opted not to run in the recent elections,” Sudhish claimed.
Reflecting on his political journey, Sudhish recounted his candidacy in Kallakurichi and Salem in past elections and expressed his desire to participate in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.
When asked about a potential alliance with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Sudhish commented, “Although Vijay and our leader, Captain Vijayakanth, share a friendly rapport, the realms of politics and personal friendships are separate. A decision regarding this will also be made at the Cuddalore conference.”
During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, DMDK leader Vijay Prabhakaran put up a strong contest against Congress leader and incumbent MP Manickam Tagore in Virudhunagar, narrowly losing by just 4,379 votes.
BJP leader and actress Radhika Sarathkumar, who also contested from Virudhunagar, secured 1,66,271 votes. DMDK, known for its loyal voter base in Tamil Nadu, is expected to maintain its alliance with the AIADMK, thereby remaining part of the NDA.
Recently, Premalatha Vijayakanth shared on social media that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a close bond with her late husband, Vijayakanth, and that this personal connection remains intact.
