Chennai, May 3 (NationPress) The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has declared that its General Council meeting is set for June 1 in Madurai.
This meeting, to be led by Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin, is anticipated to be pivotal in defining the party's strategy for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The resolution was made during a gathering of district secretaries held at the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, on Saturday morning.
In addition to this announcement, the party has also committed to holding 1,244 public meetings throughout the state, themed ‘Glorious four years lauded by the nation. Let it continue.’
The district secretaries’ meeting also passed resolutions mourning the victims of the recent Pahalgam terror attack and Pope Francis.
With the 2026 Assembly elections in view, the DMK aims to achieve the ambitious goal of winning 200 out of 234 seats.
Currently, the party holds 133 seats in the Assembly, while its INDIA bloc alliance boasts a combined strength of 159 MLAs.
A senior DMK leader informed IANS that the forthcoming General Council meeting will refine the party's strategy to meet this target, ensuring both the party and its allies are well-prepared for a decisive victory.
As part of its preparations, the DMK has appointed constituency in-charges from a pool of senior party officials, former legislators, ex-MPs, former mayors, deputy mayors, and other grassroots leaders.
Party insiders credit these in-charges as pivotal in bringing the DMK back to power in 2021 after a decade in opposition.
Notably, similar constituency-level appointments were made during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where each Assembly segment under a parliamentary constituency was assigned both a constituency in-charge and a deputy for local oversight.
To stay attuned to public sentiment, the DMK has established a dedicated in-house opinion poll group.
This team is responsible for gathering fortnightly grassroots feedback on government performance, pinpointing key people-centric issues, and providing actionable insights.
These findings are compiled into monthly reports submitted to the party headquarters for thorough review, ensuring grievances are promptly addressed through state-level interventions.
Youth Wing leader and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, along with Organising Secretary R.S. Bharathi, serve as crucial contact points for the constituency in-charges, facilitating swift resolution of public concerns.
A senior party leader noted that while the DMK has been diligently working at the grassroots level, the in-house opinion poll team has provided essential third-party validation.
“This professional feedback mechanism has given us a clear and honest reflection of grassroots realities, aiding the leadership in making informed decisions,” he stated.
Sources confirm that the party intends to replicate its successful strategy from the 2021 Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
To lead these efforts, the DMK has already formed a five-member high-level election committee chaired by Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Other committee members include R.S. Bharathi, and senior ministers K.N. Nehru, E.V. Velu, and Thangam Thenarasu.
As the 2026 polls approach, the DMK’s concentrated organizational push and systematic feedback approach demonstrate its commitment to solidifying its position in Tamil Nadu’s political arena.
