Kolkata, July 30 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the need for young doctors in India to embrace the journey of lifelong learning and stay abreast of the latest research, medical innovations, and treatments.
During her speech at the inaugural convocation of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Kalyani, located in Nadia district of West Bengal, she shared essential insights.
She encouraged physicians to lead by example by adopting a healthy lifestyle, inspiring the general public to follow suit.
President Murmu emphasized that while genetic factors play a role, many health issues can be significantly mitigated through proper diet and lifestyle choices.
"In addition to medication, it is crucial for doctors to provide lifestyle guidance to their patients. A physician's advice holds substantial weight, and when they embody an ideal lifestyle, its impact is magnified," she remarked during her address.
Furthermore, she elaborated on the vital role that socially conscious doctors have played in the nation's progress.
“The average life expectancy has risen from just 32 years at the time of Independence to approximately 70 years today. Significant advancements have been made in vaccination, with numerous diseases eradicated; for instance, India was declared free of trachoma last year,” she noted.
Nonetheless, President Murmu acknowledged that several challenges remain, where the expertise of young doctors is crucial.
“Doctors play a more significant role than the government or other stakeholders in combating health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity,” she stated.
According to her, the inaugural cohort of doctors from AIIMS, Kalyani, who are the senior-most alumni of the institute, will play a pivotal role in establishing the institution’s identity.
“In this regard, they are also the architects of the future of AIIMS, Kalyani,” added the President.
During her speech, she reminisced about how the city of Kalyani was developed by the renowned medical practitioner and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.
She recalled that even while serving as Chief Minister, Roy provided free healthcare to patients and urged the new doctors from AIIMS, Kalyani, to emulate his example by offering free medical services to the underprivileged.
