Guwahati, March 28 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated on Friday that the struggle against the drug nexus is extensive, revealing that traffickers have adopted various innovative methods, including drones, to transport narcotics shipments.
He emphasized that with these modified tactics, narcotics are being delivered by smugglers from distant locations, posing a significant risk.
“In Assam and Meghalaya, drug carriers are predominantly in operation, and this is a long-standing battle for us that will persist. However, traffickers have been employing different techniques to deliver their shipments, frequently utilizing drones as vehicles for narcotics,” he remarked.
While addressing reporters, he stated: "The issue of drugs is extensive, and every state government is making efforts to thwart drug trafficking. Assam is confronting the narcotics network with full force, maintaining a zero tolerance policy against drugs. I believe that ongoing operations against drugs are essential for eradicating this societal menace.”
The Chief Minister also mentioned that the kingpins of the drug network do not reside in India, operating instead from overseas.
“These narcotics kingpins manage operations from abroad through their agents, employing every possible method to evade law enforcement. Sometimes, multiple agents travel together with small quantities of drugs, making detection exceedingly difficult. For instance, if ten individuals travel by train from Guwahati to Delhi, each carrying half a gram of heroin, it becomes quite challenging to apprehend them. Nonetheless, security teams are consistently working to stay ahead of drug traffickers, and this is how Assam Police dismantles drug networks,” Sarma explained.
He further noted that the illegal drug nexus is a significant issue globally, with even the Donald Trump-led administration in the United States addressing this matter.
“During a recently concluded Senate meeting in the U.S., combatting the drug nexus was a primary focus. Thus, it is clear that not only Assam or Meghalaya face threats from the narcotics network; this has evolved into a global concern,” Sarma remarked, adding that ongoing operations are crucial to tackling this formidable drug nexus.
