Bhubaneswar, April 11 (NationPress) An infamous drug trafficker was injured by gunfire during a confrontation with the Special Crime Unit (SCU) of the Commissionerate Police in the Khandagiri area of Bhubaneswar late on the night of April 10 and early morning of April 11, as reported by officials on Friday.

The suspect, named Sk Jamsed from Jharpada under Badagada police jurisdiction, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg during a retaliatory gunfight and is presently receiving medical care at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

As per the SCU's statement released on Friday, Jamsed had been monitored for over a month due to his suspected participation in extensive brown sugar trafficking.

Following a tip-off regarding his possession of a substantial quantity of this illegal substance and his intention to sell it to a local dealer, the SCU initiated an operation under the leadership of Additional DCP Anup Kanungo.

At around midnight, the team attempted to apprehend Jamsed near the Khandagiri junction, but he attempted to escape towards Jayadev Vatika. During the pursuit, he allegedly opened fire at the officers trailing him. In self-defense, the SCU team returned fire, injuring him in the leg before successfully apprehending him.

A search of Jamsed revealed approximately 200 grams of brown sugar, valued at over Rs 20 lakh, as well as a mouser and two live cartridges.

The police have indicated that Jamsed is a recurrent offender with numerous narcotics-related cases in both Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

A case (225/25) has been filed at the Khandagiri police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act, and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

This marks the second such encounter in recent days. On April 4, two notorious interstate criminals from Bihar's Katihar district were captured following a police encounter on the city's outskirts.
