The convicts, Mangal Ram Mahato and Kumar Dili, both hailing from Dhanbad, received their sentences from the court presided over by the 3rd Additional District and Sessions Judge in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, according to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) official from the Bhubaneswar Zonal Unit.
They were convicted under Sections 20(b), 25, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
This case traces back to May 28, 2023, when NCB officers apprehended the duo with 273.8 kg of ganja at Rasulgarh Chowk in Bhubaneswar, as per an official statement.
Investigators uncovered their participation in an inter-state smuggling operation, where the ganja was cleverly hidden within a specially designed cavity in the driver's cabin of a truck.
Both individuals were formally charged in November 2023, and the truck used for transporting the illegal substance was also confiscated.
