Jabalpur, Feb 19 (NationPress) A Special NDPS Court in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur on Thursday handed down a sentence of 15 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1.50 lakh each on three drug traffickers for their involvement in interstate activities related to Ganja (Cannabis), according to an official from the NCB.
The trio was apprehended by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Bhopal Zonal Unit back in 2000 for trafficking more than 870 kg of Ganja from Odisha to Madhya Pradesh through Chhattisgarh, as reported by the Narcotics Control Bureau.
The convicts—Arun Kumar Sharma, Ranjit Sharma, and Ganga Choudhary—who hail from Village Koilwar, Surondha Colony, Aara, Bhojpur, Bihar, were caught along with the seizure of 879.530 kg Ganja, which is 44 times the commercial amount, as stated by the NCB.
The investigation began on November 17, 2020, when officers from the NCB's Indore Zonal Unit intercepted a truck at Shaliwada Toll Plaza (on NH-30) under Bareli Police Station within the Jabalpur district.
It was discovered that the seized Ganja originated from Boregaon, Odisha, and was intended for Maihar, MP.
A formal complaint regarding this case was submitted to the Special NDPS Court in Jabalpur on May 7, 2021.
The convicts faced penalties under sections 8(C), 20(b)(ii)(C), and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985 (as amended).
In this case, a pre-trial disposal of the confiscated drugs was conducted on June 3, 2022, while the pre-trial disposal of the seized vehicle took place on January 6, 2025, in accordance with established procedures.
The NCB emphasized that this conviction reflects its unwavering commitment to achieve the vision of a 'Drug-Free India' through diligent investigation and prosecution of cases.
This marks the second conviction secured by this unit within the current calendar year, as the Bureau continues its steadfast mission to combat the narcotics threat and safeguard society from the dangers of drug abuse.
