Drunk driver, 21, kills man and injures minor son in Bhopal car rampage
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A 35-year-old man was killed and his minor son left in critical condition after a speeding Toyota Innova driven by an allegedly intoxicated 21-year-old ploughed into a crowd before ramming their scooter in Bhopal's Kolar area late on Tuesday night, 19 August. Police confirmed the fatality on Wednesday, calling it a case of drunk driving gone catastrophically wrong.
How the Accident Unfolded
The collision occurred around midnight near Ankit Parisar in the Kolar locality when Shubham Awasthi and his young son Madhav were riding their scooter. According to Kolar police station SHO Sanjay Soni, the accused driver was allegedly heavily intoxicated and, instead of braking, pressed the accelerator — sending the vehicle out of control. The speeding Innova struck several people on the road before crashing into the Awasthi scooter with such force that the father and son were thrown several metres away and the scooter was badly mangled.
What Police Found at the Scene
Investigators say the accused had borrowed the Innova from an acquaintance to attend a party. Inside the vehicle, police reportedly found an empty liquor bottle, another liquor bottle, disposable cups, and condoms. The car's airbags deployed on impact, shielding the driver from serious injury — a detail that drew sharp anger from bystanders who had gathered at the scene.
Crowd Fury and Police Intervention
Enraged onlookers allegedly caught the driver and assaulted him, and also vandalised the vehicle. A police team, alerted to the spot, intervened to rescue the accused from the mob and took him into custody. “We are examining the evidence and questioning witnesses to ascertain the circumstances that led to the accident,” SHO Soni said. Notably, the deployment of airbags — which protected the very driver whose alleged recklessness caused the deaths — added a grim irony to the incident.
Victim's Condition and Next Steps
Shubham Awasthi was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. His body has been sent for post-mortem examination and will be handed over to the family thereafter. His son Madhav sustained critical injuries and remains under treatment at a hospital. Police have launched a formal investigation into the drunk-driving incident, examining both physical evidence and witness accounts. This comes amid growing concerns in Madhya Pradesh over road fatalities linked to drunk driving, particularly during late-night hours.
