Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar engaged in discussions with his Sudanese counterpart Mohieldin Salim Ahmed Ibrahim on Friday, emphasizing India's commitment to cease violence in Sudan and advocating for a return to dialogue.
In a post shared on X, EAM Jaishankar expressed: "A cordial meeting this afternoon with FM Mohieldin Salim Ahmed Ibrahim of Sudan. I reiterated India’s stance for an end to violence in Sudan and the importance of dialogue. We also discussed our ongoing humanitarian efforts and collaborative initiatives in education and capacity building, with a commitment to expand our activities in these areas."
Minister Ibrahim arrived in New Delhi on Thursday to participate in the upcoming second India Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, set for January 31. According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, Ibrahim's visit is anticipated to enhance the ties between the people of both nations.
"We are pleased to welcome H.E. Mohieldin Salim Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Sudan, for the second India Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. This visit is expected to further strengthen the interpersonal connections between India and Sudan," Jaiswal noted on X.
India is set to host the 2nd India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (IAFMM) on January 31, in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates. This event will see participation from Foreign Ministers of various Arab League Member States along with the Arab League Secretary General.
The second India-Arab Foreign Ministers Meeting aims to enhance existing cooperation and broaden partnerships, following the 4th India-Arab Senior Officials’ Meeting.
This gathering marks a decade since the first meeting, which was hosted in Bahrain in 2016. During that inaugural meeting, leaders identified five key areas for cooperation: economy, energy, education, media, and culture, proposing multiple initiatives across these sectors.
As the MEA highlighted, the India Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is the primary institutional mechanism driving this partnership, formalized in March 2002 with the signing of an MoU between India and the League of Arab States (LAS).
A Memorandum of Cooperation was established for the Arab-India Cooperation Forum during a visit by the then Arab League Secretary General Amre Moussa to India in December 2008, later revised in 2013 to enhance its structural organization. Notably, India serves as an Observer in the League of Arab States, a coalition of 22 member nations.
