Kolkata, Oct 16 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India has issued a directive for the immediate replacement of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) across 79 Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, citing violations of the ECI-mandated selection criteria.
A formal communication has been dispatched to the West Bengal government, requesting the nomination of state officials who fulfill the necessary criteria to serve as EROs.
The ECI’s guidelines specify that only officials from the West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) cadre, including sub-divisional magistrates, sub-divisional officers, and rural development officers, are eligible for selection as EROs.
However, an insider from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal revealed that the ECI identified that for these 78 constituencies, officers from the state civil service below the required ranks had been appointed, prompting the Commission to mandate their replacement.
The ECI is currently reviewing the rank status of all EROs across the 294 Assembly constituencies in the state, discovering similar discrepancies in other areas as well. Replacements for EROs in these constituencies will also be mandated.
Recently, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, brought the ECI’s attention to alleged irregularities in the ERO selection process within the state, echoing concerns about the appointment of state civil service officers below the mandated ranks.
Subsequently, the ECI directed the CEO’s office to ensure that the ECI-mandated selection criteria for electoral officers, particularly booth-level officers (BLOs) and EROs, remain strictly adhered to.
The ECI has instructed the District Magistrates, who also serve as District Electoral Officers, and the Additional District Magistrate (Elections) to complete the 'mapping and matching' process within the week, after which the notification for the SIR will be released.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, clarified last week that existing voters listed in the 2022 voters' list will automatically be recognized as valid voters.
Those who do not appear on the 2022 list must provide citizenship proof as required by the ECI. Notably, an Aadhaar card alone will not suffice; the voter must present one additional document as specified by the ECI.
