Key Takeaways
New Delhi/Guwahati, March 16 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated the transfer of five IAS officers to serve as District Election Officers (DEOs) across various districts in Assam. This decision is part of the Commission's strategy to facilitate the seamless execution of the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state.
In a formal directive sent to Assam's Chief Secretary, the ECI indicated that this move follows a thorough assessment of the state's election readiness for the 2026 General Election to the Legislative Assembly.
The appointed IAS officer P. Uday Praveen (2016 batch) will take charge as DEO of Kokrajhar, with Srishti Singh (2021 batch) stepping in as DEO of Majuli.
Additionally, Kimnei Changsan (2014 batch) has been assigned as DEO of Baksa district.
Moreover, IAS officer Madhusudan Nath (2014 batch) has been designated as DEO of Chirang, while Jay Vikash (2021 batch) will oversee Udalguri district as DEO.
The ECI has instructed that these appointments be executed immediately and has requested the Assam government to provide a compliance report confirming the assumption of responsibility by these officers.
According to the guidelines, the compliance report regarding the officers' joining must be submitted to the Commission by 3 p.m. on March 17.
Furthermore, the Commission has emphasized that officers who have been reassigned should not engage in any election-related duties until the electoral process concludes in the state.
This transfer initiative is part of the ECI's administrative actions aimed at promoting fairness and transparency in the electoral process.
The elections in Assam will take place for all 126 Assembly constituencies in a single phase on April 9, with the vote counting scheduled for May 4.
The Election Commission continues to issue several administrative directives and deploy officials throughout the state to monitor election preparedness and ensure a smooth electoral process.
