Fernando Xavier Bucheli Vargas, Ambassador of Ecuador to India, has described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an influential voice for the Global South, citing Modi's unique ability to engage simultaneously with developing economies and the world's most powerful nations. Speaking in New Delhi on 10 June, Vargas also pointed to India's position as the fourth-largest economy and the world's most populous country as factors that amplify its standing in global affairs.

Envoy's Praise for Modi's Leadership

Responding to a question about Prime Minister Modi becoming India's longest-serving Prime Minister, Vargas offered his congratulations. 'I want to congratulate the people of India and especially the Prime Minister for his long-standing service to the people. We are very proud to be in a country that is managed by such a leader as Narendra Modi,' he said.

Vargas elaborated that Modi's stature stems from his capacity to bridge economic divides on the world stage. 'Prime Minister Modi is a reference in the Global South because he is a leader who can talk at the same time with the South economies, and he could be seated also with the first economy in the world,' he noted, adding that India's demographic and economic weight makes it a voice that the world must heed.

Complementary Economies and Bilateral Trade

The envoy highlighted the complementary nature of the India-Ecuador economic relationship, noting that the two nations exchange goods that serve each other's core needs. Ecuador currently exports gold, oil, and cocoa to India, while importing automobiles, bikes, pharmaceutical products, and agricultural ingredients from India.

'Ecuador and India are complementary economies. We offer the products that India is looking for,' Vargas said. He also pointed to Ecuador's agricultural potential, noting that the country's fertile land produces 'almost all kinds of food you can imagine' — positioning Ecuador as a future food-supply partner for a growing India.

Investment Push in Renewables and Agriculture

Vargas said Ecuador is actively courting Indian investors, particularly in the sectors of renewable energy and agriculture. He stressed that Indian companies are being invited to explore investment opportunities in Ecuador, signalling a desire to deepen economic engagement beyond trade.

Negotiations are also reportedly under way in the pharmaceutical sector — not merely for medicine procurement, but for broader cooperation on regulatory frameworks and technical standards. 'We are getting some negotiations to have cooperation within the pharmaceutical sector, not only to purchase medicines but also to have cooperation in regulations in the technical sectors,' Vargas said.

Upcoming Foreign Minister Visit to Strengthen Ties

A visit by Ecuador's Foreign Minister to India is expected in the near term, which Vargas said would serve as a platform to formally strengthen bilateral relations. This comes amid a broader push by Ecuador to position itself as a strategic partner for India across trade, investment, and diplomatic engagement.

The envoy's remarks reflect a growing recognition among smaller economies of India's rising global influence — and an eagerness to align with New Delhi as it consolidates its role as a leading voice for the developing world.
