Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Jan 30 (NationPress) A district court in Keonjhar, Odisha, has sentenced eight individuals to a term of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for their involvement in the brutal assault of a 58-year-old woman in the Ramachandrapur area, which tragically resulted in her death during medical treatment in 2023.
The convicts have also been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 each; failure to comply will result in an additional three-month jail term.
On March 22, 2023, the victim, Mali Jena, was sitting on her home’s verandah when the accused, accompanied by a mob of 100 to 150 individuals armed with dangerous weapons, arrived at the scene. Terrified, Jena sought refuge inside her home. Two of the assailants forcibly pulled her outside, where they, along with others, proceeded to assault her without mercy. Neighbors, hearing her screams, rushed to assist her, prompting the attackers to flee the scene,” stated Additional Public Prosecutor Soumitri Kumar Rout.
Following the attack, Jena sustained multiple injuries and was initially transported to a local hospital in Anandapur. However, due to her deteriorating condition, she was later referred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.
Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries at the SCB hospital on March 29, 2023.
Reports indicate that the violence stemmed from political rivalries between supporters of the then-sitting local sarpanch and a defeated candidate. The deceased’s side had been opposing the activities of the accused's faction.
Additionally, Jena was leading a group of women from Saladei village to protest against the illegal transportation of heavily loaded sand trucks through their village, resulting in significant financial losses for the accused, who held a lease for sand extraction from the Saladei sand ghat.
Ultimately, on March 22, 2023, Jena was severely injured in the assault and, despite medical intervention, died from her injuries on March 29.
