Ex-Haryana Chief Minister Hooda Calls for Crop Damage Compensation

Chandigarh, Dec 29 (NationPress) Ex-Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Sunday urged the government to provide compensation for the damage inflicted on standing wheat and other crops due to recent hailstorms across the state.

He pointed out that hailstorms have impacted approximately 150 villages across multiple districts, including Hisar, Palwal, Gurugram, Fatehabad, Bhiwani, Jind, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Kaithal, and Sirsa over the last two days.

The standing crops of wheat, mustard, and various vegetables have incurred significant losses, with reports indicating 60% to 80% damage to the mustard crop. In addition, crops of potato, cabbage, tomato, and other vegetables have also been adversely affected.

Hooda emphasized the necessity for appropriate compensation for farmers by conducting a special 'girdawari' assessment. He criticized the BJP for entangling farmers in a complex portal system under the guise of compensation. “The government should liberate farmers from this confusion so that they can receive compensation directly. The outstanding compensation from previous seasons should also be disbursed promptly,” he stated.

The two-time Chief Minister noted that the government persistently overlooks the issues and requests of farmers. “Farmers continue to protest for the demand of MSP (minimum support price). The situation of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on a hunger strike, is alarming, yet the BJP is unresponsive and has not engaged with the protesters,” he expressed.

“The government needs to address farmers' demands urgently and put an end to Dallewal's fast,” he added.

In a related development, a khap mahapanchayat held in Hisar has voiced its support for the ongoing farmers’ movement. The resolutions made at this assembly could potentially shape the future of the protests, with discussions centering around various issues, including Dallewal's hunger strike.

Farmer leaders have urged Haryana's khap panchayats to lend support in fulfilling their long-standing demands.
