Srinagar, Nov 4 (NationPress) A former Managing Director (MD) of the J&K Cooperative Central Land Development Bank has been found guilty of forging his date of birth, resulting in a court sentence of two years' imprisonment.
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Kashmir reported that Mohammad Shafi Banday, the former MD, was convicted for illegally altering his date of birth to extend his service.
According to the investigation, the case arose from a complaint which claimed the accused had falsely listed his date of birth as 01.09.1939, instead of his actual birth year, 1934, by presenting a forged certificate.
During the inquiry conducted by the Crime Branch Kashmir, it was confirmed that the real date of birth was 26.06.1932.
A formal case was subsequently registered at the Crime Branch Kashmir (now under the EOW). The investigation revealed that the accused had wrongfully extended his service by over seven years, resulting in personal gain at the expense of the state exchequer.
Following a thorough trial, the Hon’ble Court of City Judge, Srinagar, convicted the accused under Sections 420, 468, and 471 RPC, imposing two years of simple imprisonment for each count and a fine of Rs 5,000 for every offence.
All sentences will run concurrently. This conviction highlights the EOW’s steadfast dedication to ensuring transparency, accountability, and integrity within public service,” the statement concluded.
The J&K Police have been actively probing fraudulent schemes involving financial institutions and public funds.
Civil servants are routinely monitored for their financial status and performance to maintain discipline and accountability in civil services.
