Jabalpur, June 5 (NationPress) The wife of former Congress MLA Vijay Raghvendra Singh reportedly attempted to take her own life following a heated discussion with officials at a government office in Katni district, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday.
This alarming incident took place at the Tehsil office in Barwara, located approximately 30 km from Katni's district headquarters.
Ranjeeta Singh had gone to the Tehsil office to address a land dispute on that day.
As per reports, Ranjeeta Singh, accompanied by several supporters of her husband, arrived at the Tehsil office around 12 p.m. to inquire about her complaint concerning a disputed land situated in the Barwara police station area.
Suddenly, she emerged from the Tehsildar's cabin, shouting in distress, and doused herself with kerosene in a desperate act of self-harm.
Witnesses, including government officials, described the scene as horrifying, according to a source familiar with the incident who spoke to IANS.
Fortunately, before she could ignite the kerosene, bystanders intervened and restrained her.
The police were alerted about the situation promptly.
In subsequent conversations with the media, Ranjeeta Singh claimed that individuals linked to the ruling BJP have unlawfully encroached upon her land in Barwara, a complaint she had lodged at the Tehsil office approximately six months earlier.
She further alleged that her repeated visits to the Tehsil office over the past six months yielded no action against the encroachers.
"The Tehsildar is favoring the land encroachers due to their connections with the BJP. This biased attitude compelled me to take such drastic actions," she stated.
Later, she submitted her complaint to the district administration, alleging unfair treatment from officials at the Barwara Tehsil office, and requested a thorough investigation.
She also advocated for the transfer of the Tehsildar pending the inquiry. Her husband, Vijay Raghvendra Singh, had secured a victory in the Assembly elections from Barwara in 2018.
The Congress party put him forward for the Assembly elections in November 2023, but he lost to BJP's Dhirendra Bahadur Singh. The Barwara constituency, part of the Katni district, is significant in the political dynamics of the Mahakoshal region.
As a segment of the Shahdol Lok Sabha constituency, Barwara is designated for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes.
