Wayanad, Sep 13 (NationPress) In a shocking development that has intensified the turmoil within the Congress party's Kerala faction, Padmaja, the daughter-in-law of former Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC) Treasurer N.M. Vijayan, attempted to take her own life on Saturday by allegedly slitting her wrist.
She was swiftly admitted to a private hospital in Bathery, where authorities confirmed that her condition is stable, and the injuries are not life-threatening.
In a statement to the press, Padmaja's son expressed his despair: "First, we lost my grandfather (N.M. Vijayan), and now my father is unwell due to all these issues. My mother is also suffering. With two siblings, we are uncertain about our future."
Wayanad District Congress President N.D. Appachen responded to the suicide attempt, stating that the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) had fulfilled its promise to Padmaja, referring to the Rs 20 lakh disbursed to her.
However, he added, "She (Padmaja) is demanding crores from the Congress. We suspect that both the CPI-M and the BJP are involved behind the scenes. The KPCC will always keep its commitments, and we are acting in accordance with the assurances provided."
A suicide note was retrieved, in which she lamented, "Murderous Congress, here is one more victim for you." Her attempt occurred just a day after she publicly criticized the Congress leadership for failing to uphold the promises made to her family following her father-in-law's tragic death.
Padmaja fiercely condemned the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, asserting that despite repeated commitments, the party has not addressed her family's financial struggles.
"The Congress has betrayed us again. I have lost all trust in the party. They harm the honest and allow the dishonest to thrive. Even when my husband was hospitalized, we lacked funds for his treatment. The party is destroying those who place their faith in it. We no longer desire Congress' charity," she declared.
She revealed that Vijayan left behind debts totaling Rs 2.5 crore. While Congress leaders initially pledged to settle these debts, only Rs 20 lakh has been allocated so far.
Padmaja accused Congress MLA T. Siddique of backing out of an agreement to repay the debts, claiming, "When I visited the lawyer's office to finalize the contract, Siddique lost his temper."
The family is now preparing to appeal to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, alleging that the Congress subcommittee formed to address their grievances has ignored their plight.
