Retaliation by CM Vijayan: Congress Leaders Named in FIR Linked to Congress Leader's Suicide

Wayanad, Jan 9 (NationPress) In a rapid development that has embroiled the Congress party in controversy, the Kerala Police filed an FIR on Thursday naming several party officials in a suicide case.

The FIR includes Sulthan Bathery Congress legislator I.C. Balakrishnan, former party MLA and Wayanad district Congress committee president N.D. Appachan, along with other party leaders in the suicide case of treasurer N.M. Vijayan.

This swift action by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also serves as the Home Minister, can be interpreted as a retaliatory measure following the Congress's demand for accountability from CPI-M Kannur district panchayat president and emerging youth leader P.P. Divya regarding the suicide of Kannur Additional District Magistrate Naveen Babu last October.

Under pressure, not only did Divya resign from her position, but she also evaded capture for a period.

After her anticipatory bail plea was denied, Divya was apprehended and spent a few days in jail before securing bail and her release.

Treasurer N.M. Vijayan and his son were discovered deceased in their Wayanad home on December 27, and his suicide note detailed the sums collected from various candidates for appointments in cooperative banks.

The note also named Congress leaders who allegedly received these funds, including Balakrishnan, Appachan, and K.K. Gopinathan, alongside the loans he incurred to repay these amounts.

Vijayan's suicide note stated that he wished for the note to be delivered to the Congress leaders, instructing his son Vijesh to wait for ten days before presenting it to the Wayanad district police chief.

Based on this letter, the Wayanad police have now initiated an FIR against the prominent Congress leaders.

Responding to the situation, Appachan remarked, “Just observe how the Vijayan government is handling cases. We all witnessed P.V. Anvar (a two-time legislator who switched allegiances from the Left camp) being arrested and imprisoned. Therefore, this action against us by the police is not unprecedented. My hands are clean. Now that I am implicated in the FIR, I will contest the charges.”

With Divya having been arrested on charges of “abetment of suicide,” both the CPI-M and CM Vijayan perceive that the same could apply to Balakrishnan and Appachan, the leading Congress figures in Wayanad.

Now, all attention is directed towards the potential outcomes for these Congress leaders.

In the meantime, Vijayan's other son and wife, after receiving a visit from Congress leaders led by veteran legislator and former Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, have expressed unwavering support for their father’s party.
