Wayanad, Sep 13 (NationPress) - In a shocking development that has escalated tensions within the Congress party's Kerala division, Padmaja, the daughter-in-law of ex-Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC) Treasurer N.M. Vijayan, attempted to take her own life on Saturday by reportedly slitting her wrist.
She is currently being treated at a private hospital in Bathery, where authorities have stated her condition is stable and her injuries are not critical.
In a statement to the press, Padmaja's son expressed his distress, saying: "First, we lost my grandfather (N.M. Vijayan), and now, due to all the turmoil, my father is unwell."
"My mother is also suffering. I have two siblings, and we are uncertain about our future," he added, visibly shaken.
In response to the suicide attempt, N.D. Appachen, the Wayanad District Congress President, mentioned that the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) had provided Padmaja with what was promised, specifically referring to the Rs 20 lakh aid.
"However, she (Padmaja) expects crores from the Congress. We suspect that the CPI-M and the BJP are manipulating the situation. The KPCC remains committed to honoring its promises," Appachen explained.
A suicide note was discovered, in which Padmaja declared, "Murderous Congress, here is yet another victim for you."
This tragic event follows her public accusation against Congress leadership for failing to uphold commitments made to Vijayan's family after his death due to overwhelming debts.
Padmaja fiercely criticized the KPCC, claiming that despite numerous assurances, the party has neglected to alleviate her family's financial burdens.
"The Congress has deceived us once again. I have lost all faith in the party. They harm the honest while allowing wrongdoers to thrive. Even during my husband's hospitalization, we struggled to pay his bills. The party is destroying those who place their trust in it. We no longer require Congress' help," Padmaja lamented.
She asserted that Vijayan had left behind debts totaling Rs 2.5 crore.
Although Congress leaders initially pledged to address these debts, only Rs 20 lakh has been disbursed to date.
Padmaja accused Congress MLA T. Siddique of signing an agreement for repayment but later reneging on the promise.
"When I visited the lawyer's office to finalize the contract, Siddique became hostile," she recounted.
The family now intends to approach Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan regarding this issue, alleging that the Congress subcommittee established to address their concerns has ignored their plight.
