Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw jointly inaugurated a new manufacturing facility of global electronics firm Jabil in Pune on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, marking a significant addition to Maharashtra's fast-expanding electronics and deep-tech industrial base.

Context

The inauguration included the unveiling of a foundation stone (kोनशिला) at the Jabil facility, with senior state legislators and Jabil's global leadership in attendance. Andy Priestley, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Jabil, and B. N. Shukla, Managing Director of Jabil Circuit India Pvt. Ltd., represented the company at the event. MLAs Dilip Walse Patil and Dnyaneshwar Katke were also present.

Speaking at the event, CM Fadnavis said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has achieved unprecedented progress in infrastructure, manufacturing, and technology. He cited the Vande Bharat trains and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project as examples of India positioning itself alongside developed nations in rail infrastructure.

Policy Backdrop

Maharashtra's push in electronics and data infrastructure is anchored in a broader national framework. The central government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electronics and IT hardware, notified in 2020, has been a key driver for attracting global manufacturers like Jabil to India. The Semicon India programme, launched in 2021, further incentivised semiconductor and display fabrication investment.

CM Fadnavis stated that approximately 60% of India's data centre capacity is being developed in Maharashtra, and the state leads in deep tech, electronics, semiconductor, and chip manufacturing. He also noted that Maharashtra contributes around 14% to India's GDP and approximately 20% to the country's total exports. The Electronics Cluster awarded to Pune district is expected to drive transformative change in India's electronics sector.

The state's Maharashtra State Data Centre Policy, introduced around 2022, has been central to positioning the state as India's primary data-centre hub, complemented by ease-of-doing-business reforms and fast-track decision-making processes that the Chief Minister highlighted at the event.

Stakeholders and Impact

Jabil, a US-headquartered electronics manufacturing services company, operates across global supply chains and its expanded Pune presence signals continued confidence in India's manufacturing ecosystem. The facility is expected to integrate manufacturing, research, and export functions, reinforcing Pune's status as a rising electronics hub.

CM Fadnavis presented an ambitious proposal before Union Minister Vaishnaw to connect JNPT and the nearly complete Wadhavan Port via a dedicated freight rail corridor alongside the Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway. This corridor is planned to extend to dry ports at Jalna and Wardha, and further to Gadchiroli, creating a multimodal logistics spine linking coastal ports with the state's interior industrial zones.

The proposed Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad Bullet Train corridor, flagged by CM Fadnavis, would reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune to just 48 minutes and is expected to catalyse an integrated economic zone along the corridor. Cabinet and board-level approvals for the JNPT-Wadhavan dedicated freight rail corridor will be closely watched as the next concrete step. Further electronics and semiconductor investment announcements tied to the Pune Electronics Cluster are anticipated as the state consolidates its position as India's leading technology manufacturing destination.
