False Bomb Threats Hit Tamil Nadu Secretariat and DGP Office; Authorities Pursue Caller

Chennai, Jan 5 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu government secretariat and the state police headquarters were subjected to false bomb threats on Sunday, following a similar incident reported at Anna University the previous day.

As per the Greater Chennai Police, an unknown person contacted the police control room via telephone, making a bomb threat aimed at the state secretariat and the office of the Director General of Police (DGP).

In response to the call, police carried out an immediate investigation, which revealed the threat to be a hoax.

Sources from the Greater Chennai Police confirmed that a formal case has been registered, and efforts are ongoing to track down the caller using their phone number.

This incident follows a hoax bomb threat received by Anna University on Saturday.

In that instance, an email threatened the presence of explosives within the university grounds.

The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) conducted a search utilizing sniffer dogs, ultimately confirming that the threat was unfounded.

Authorities have also registered a case and are actively investigating to uncover the identity of the email sender.

Earlier in August 2024, Chennai airport authorities received an email alleging that bombs had been planted on a flight scheduled to transport Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to San Francisco.

This email, which was initially sent to Cochin airport, was redirected to Chennai airport officials. Although the airline was not specifically mentioned, the email claimed that explosives were placed on the CM's flight.

After thorough security evaluations, this threat was also confirmed to be a hoax.

In October 2024, nine educational institutions in Tamil Nadu, including St. Joseph’s College and Holy Cross College, were recipients of hoax bomb threats via email.

Following extensive searches by BDDS personnel, all threats were determined to be false.

In November 2024, multiple schools and a college in Tiruchy district, such as Mahatma Gandhi Centenary Higher Secondary School and Holy Cross Women’s College, also received bomb threats.

Bomb disposal teams were deployed, but no explosives were discovered during their inspections.

Authorities have observed a troubling increase in false bomb threats targeting schools, colleges, and public infrastructure throughout Tamil Nadu and across the nation.

Despite swift responses and the deployment of resources, the majority of these threats have been proven to be baseless upon investigation.

Police continue their efforts to trace the origin of these menacing threats and combat the rising issue of hoax bomb calls and emails.
