Why Does the Family of a Guest Worker Who Died at TVK's Salem Meet Refuse to Accept the Body?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Salem, Feb 14 (NationPress) The relatives of a 37-year-old guest worker who tragically collapsed and passed away during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) executive meeting in Salem have declined to accept his remains, demanding monetary support from party founder Vijay.
The deceased, Suraj, hailed from Maharashtra and had resided in Salem for almost two decades, working at a silver workshop.
He attended a significant gathering of TVK officials on Friday at a private venue near the Seelanaickkanpatty bypass road.
Approximately 5,000 party representatives from 11 Assembly constituencies were invited to the event.
According to police and eyewitness testimonies, Suraj experienced a sudden seizure and fainted while Vijay was addressing the attendees from a campaign vehicle.
A medical team present at the event provided immediate first aid, but due to the severity of his condition, he was quickly transported to a nearby private hospital.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to his condition en route. The Annadhanapatty police arrived at the scene after being notified and initiated an investigation.
Suraj's remains were subsequently taken to the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy.
He is survived by his wife Priyanka (32) and two children, a 10-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son.
Family members expressed their sorrow, stating that Suraj was the family's sole provider, leaving them in a precarious situation.
“We will not accept the body until Vijay offers financial assistance to Suraj’s family,” said Lakshmanan, Suraj’s maternal uncle.
He claimed that no senior TVK leader had reached out to the family to offer condolences.
Friends and relatives noted that Vijay did not issue any public statement during the meeting to honor Suraj's passing.
The family also disputed claims that Suraj had a pre-existing heart condition.
While some party representatives suggested he had health issues, relatives insisted that he had no known heart problems.
In response to the incident, TVK Joint General Secretary Nirmal Kumar expressed on social media that Suraj fainted due to illness and received immediate first aid before being taken to the hospital.
“It is profoundly saddening that Suraj passed away from a heart attack. We extend our deepest condolences to his family,” he stated.
This incident has ignited discussions locally and across social media, with many urging the party to provide swift support to the grieving family.
