MP launches Farmer ID drive from Aug 20, teams to reach villages
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Saturday, 22 August announced that the state had launched a statewide Farmer ID registration campaign from 20 August, with government teams deployed directly to villages to assist farmers through the enrolment process. The announcement was made virtually from New Delhi as Yadav addressed the Balram Krishi Mahotsav at the Agricultural Produce Market in Piparsama, Shivpuri district.
How the Farmer ID Campaign Works
Under the drive, state government teams are visiting villages to facilitate the creation of Farmer IDs, eliminating the need for farmers to travel to offices or wait in queues. Chief Minister Yadav urged all farmers in the state to participate, saying the process had been designed to come to them. “Farmers will not have to wander from place to place or stand in queues. Government teams will reach them and facilitate the creation of Farmer IDs,” he said.
Fertiliser Access and Loan Repayment Relief
Yadav assured farmers there would be no shortage of fertilisers, adding that the state government had decided to make fertilisers available in advance at zero per cent interest so that lack of funds does not disrupt agricultural operations. He also announced the abolition of the 31 March deadline for repayment of agricultural loans, allowing farmers to repay at any point within a year — a significant easing of financial pressure ahead of the Rabi season.
On the fertiliser procurement front, the e-Vikas 2.0 system has been upgraded to allow farmers to purchase fertilisers according to their own requirements, removing the earlier constraint of mandatory bundling of different fertiliser types. Yadav described the revamp as making the system more ‘farmer-friendly’.
Income Diversification and Electricity for Farmers
The Chief Minister encouraged farmers to look beyond traditional crops, highlighting horticulture, dairy, fisheries, and animal husbandry as additional income streams. He noted that Shivpuri’s groundnut production is gaining national recognition, and pointed to tourism and homestay opportunities around the Madhav Tiger Reserve as further avenues for supplementary income.
Yadav also announced that from next year, farmers cultivating gram and sugarcane would receive a full-day electricity supply, ending the practice of night-time irrigation. Currently, farmers under the Kisan Samman Nidhi receive a combined annual assistance of ₹12,000 through contributions from both the Centre and the state government.
Raksha Bandhan Transfers and Ladli Behna
Extending Raksha Bandhan greetings, Yadav confirmed that funds had already been transferred to the accounts of farmers and Ladli Behna scheme beneficiaries ahead of the festival, signalling the government’s intent to align welfare disbursements with cultural milestones. The move is consistent with the state’s broader push to position direct benefit transfers as a visible and timely intervention for rural households.
With the Farmer ID drive now underway, the state’s next steps will be closely watched for enrolment numbers and the pace at which village-level teams complete coverage across Madhya Pradesh’s extensive rural geography.
