New Delhi, May 1 (NationPress) An extensive blaze erupted at Dilli Haat, a renowned marketplace in south Delhi, on Wednesday night. A total of 13 fire engines were dispatched to the scene.

Officials indicated that approximately 25 to 30 shops were severely damaged by the flames. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or injuries.

The inferno inflicted significant destruction, with merchandise worth lakhs being consumed by the fire.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a short circuit may have sparked the fire.

"We received an emergency call about the fire at Dilli Haat Market INA at 8:55 p.m. and deployed 13 fire engines to the area. Ongoing operations are in progress," stated an official from the Delhi Fire Service to IANS.

Fire Officer Sanjay Tomar informed IANS, "A total of 14 fire tenders and over 50 personnel were dispatched to the scene. We managed to contain the fire from spreading further, despite challenging wind conditions."

"On April 30, around 8:45 p.m., a PCR call regarding a fire at Dilli Haat was received at Sarojini Nagar Police Station. Upon arrival, the Station House Officer and police staff promptly evacuated the area as a safety precaution, discovering that around 24 tender shops in the Stage Area of Dilli Haat were ablaze. Four fire tenders were on-site and have largely controlled the flames. Initial assessments indicate that 24 shops have been affected, but thankfully, no injuries or fatalities have been reported. Police and fire teams remain on-site, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire," stated Delhi Police.

Dilli Haat is a popular hub for arts and crafts, featuring a food plaza as well.

This incident marks the second fire occurrence in the same day.

Earlier on Wednesday, another fire ignited in a building within Gandhi Nagar Market.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her concern, stating she is closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that all necessary support is provided to those impacted.

"The news of the fire at Dilli Haat is unfortunate. The firefighting team has managed to control the flames. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported yet. We are vigilantly overseeing the situation and ensuring that all necessary help is extended to those affected," she shared on X.

Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra confirmed that an investigation into the fire's cause will be launched, and compensation will be provided to those who lost their shops.

"Upon receiving the fire alert, I arrived here immediately. This is a deeply regrettable incident; around 26 shops have been entirely destroyed. The artisans and vendors operating these shops have faced substantial financial losses. I have instructed my officials to evaluate the total damage. We will not allow any artisan to suffer losses; the government stands firmly with them," Mishra stated.
