What Happened in Hyderabad When Fire Struck a Coaching Institute?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Feb 20 (NationPress) Approximately 50 students from a coaching institute were successfully rescued after a fire erupted in a commercial complex located in the Ameerpet area of Hyderabad on Friday. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, according to police.
Fire-fighting teams managed to rescue around 50 students who were trapped on the second floor of an IT coaching institute.
The incident took place at Maitrivanam, right in the bustling heart of the city.
Students attending classes at the Nilgiri Block of the G+5 commercial building found themselves trapped due to the fire, leading to widespread panic in the active area.
Firefighters arrived promptly with fire engines and initiated efforts to extinguish the flames and rescue those inside.
While some students managed to escape by descending from balconies, rescue workers used ladders to save 50 students.
In the aftermath, authorities closed down shops within the complex and sent students from other coaching institutes situated in the building back home.
Initial investigations by police suggest that the fire was ignited by an electrical short circuit from a panel board on the ground floor. As smoke enveloped the first and second floors, panic ensued among those present in the building.
Students attending classes on the second floor were trapped due to the thick smoke. Bystanders from other blocks started rescue efforts prior to the arrival of police and firefighters.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries occurred during the incident. A police officer stated that a case has been registered, and further investigations are ongoing.
The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) Commissioner, A.V. Ranganath, visited the affected building and informed the media that the blaze was caused by a short circuit.
Personnel from the HYDRAA also took part in the rescue operations.
Ranganath pointed out that garbage obstructing balconies complicated rescue efforts but noted that fortunately, the flames did not spread. Had they done so, it could have resulted in a significant disaster.
He added that the HYDRAA, Fire Services, and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), along with the Electricity department, recently initiated a campaign to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.
Ranganath stated that a month has been allotted to all buildings to implement necessary fire safety measures, with safety inspections set to commence next month.
